What to Eat (and Avoid) After Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants are an incredible solution for missing teeth, but proper post-operative care is essential to a successful outcome. What you eat in the days and weeks after surgery directly affects healing.
First 24 hours
- Stick to cold, soft foods: yogurt, smoothies (no straw), applesauce, pudding, mashed potatoes.
- Avoid hot drinks and foods.
- No alcohol, no smoking, no straws.
Days 2 to 7
- Continue soft foods: eggs, pasta, soft fish, oatmeal, well-cooked vegetables.
- Avoid chewing directly on the implant site.
- Skip crunchy, hard, or sticky foods.
Weeks 2 to 6
- Gradually reintroduce normal foods as you feel comfortable.
- Still avoid hard or crunchy foods on the implant side.
- No popcorn, hard nuts, ice, or chewing gum on the implant.
After osseointegration (3 to 6 months)
Once your final crown is placed and the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, you can eat normally. The implant should feel just like a natural tooth.
Signs to call us right away
- Persistent pain after 5 days that does not respond to medication.
- Heavy bleeding that does not stop with gauze pressure.
- Fever or signs of infection.
- The implant feels loose.
Follow these guidelines and your implant should heal beautifully.
