Surgical Instructions

Following the right instructions before and after your surgical procedure helps ensure smooth healing and the best possible result. Below are general guidelines for the most common procedures we perform.

Before your procedure

• Eat a light meal 1 to 2 hours before surgery unless your provider tells you otherwise.
• Take any prescribed pre-medications exactly as directed.
• Arrange transportation home if you will receive sedation.
• Wear comfortable, loose clothing.

After your procedure

• Bite gently on the gauze for 30 to 60 minutes to control bleeding.
• Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours.
• Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, and smoking for at least 48 hours.
• Take pain medication as prescribed before the local anesthetic wears off.
• Eat soft, cool foods for the first day.
• Do not use straws for at least 5 days after extractions.

• Bleeding that does not stop after 2 hours of constant pressure.
• Severe or worsening pain after 48 hours.
• Fever, chills, or signs of infection.
• Excessive swelling that worsens after the third day.
