In laymen’s terms, a dental inlay is a material, typically gold or white gold, that is placed into the cavities of a tooth.
The purpose of the tooth inlay is to fill the cavity with a hard material that will create a solid surface for the tooth. These dental inlays also play an important part in the process of creating a crown, which is the covering over a tooth that is most appealing to patients and of course, their dental care providers. Dental applications for inlay are most typically used for gold teeth in conjunction with porcelain crowns.
Some examples of what is an inlay are dental crowns, gold dental fillings, gold tooth whitening kits, and gold dental veneers. These all have the same purpose and effect; they act as a barrier around a tooth and keep debris from entering into the cavity of the tooth. For example, a gold dental filling that is placed into a cavity will act as a hard protective barrier to prevent bacteria from getting into the tooth. If any plaque is left behind, the gold dental filling will work as a deterrent to the growth of bacteria by eating it away. Once the bacteria have been removed, the gold tooth can be removed and the gold dental filling could then be placed into the tooth.
The process of gold dental fillings using a dental inlay material is not unlike that of gold dental crowns. The same material is used, but in this case, the gold is an active part of the process of filling the cavity. This gold acts as a hard layer to prevent any formation of bacteria, and it also acts as a shield to the tooth so that anything that would cause damage to the tooth is kept out. Gold is often used because of how it looks, but it is also used because it is extremely durable and it does not require any removal before or after the procedure.
