Foods to Eat, Foods to Avoid After Dental Implants

If you have an imperfect smile, dental implants can be used to correct areas where teeth at missing.

Not only will this make your smile more aesthetically pleasing and enhance your self-confidence, but it will also allow you to eat your favorite foods from that past once again!

Before indulging in your favorite dish after an implant procedure, it is imperative that you allow your mouth time to heal. This will allow the implants to last for many years!

Patients that prepare for their dental implant recovery usually end up having a smoother recovery period.

This part consists of knowing what you should and shouldn’t at while you are recovering from the procedure.

Before your procedure, it is advised to shop for some soft foods. Patients that have dental implant procedures typically stock up on the following items for the recovery period:

  • Applesauce
  • Custard
  • Perogies
  • Eggs
  • Freshly cooked vegetables
  • Fruit smoothies
  • Soft fruits
  • Fish
  • Herbal teas
  • French toast
  • Jello
  • Oatmeal
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Pasta
  • Popsicles
  • Yogurt
  • Juice
  • Rice
  • Soups (rich in protein)

You may have to get a bit creative with your recipes while you are recovering. As long as you are using soft ingredients and avoiding crunchy foods or seeds, you should be fine.

Crunchy foods and seeds can get stuck in the open wound and prevent it from healing correctly. While you are recovering, you must drink a good amount of water- it improves your immunity and recovery time!

Just like with any other form of oral surgery, you must refrain from hard foods while your mouth is healing.

The treated area will be sensitive, and below the surface, the implant is in the process of fusing to the jawbone.

Hard foods could move the implant before fusing can take place. For a week following surgery, it is best to steer clear of:

  • Hard foods of any kind
  • Popcorn
  • Potato chips
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Bagels
  • Cookies
  • Straws
  • Acidic foods
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Sugary foods
  • Extreme hot or cold items
  • Sticky foods

After the procedure, it is important to maintain a high level of nutrition to aid with the healing process.

Even though you may not want to eat the day your procedure is completed, it is important to ingest at least clear fluids. From there, you will be able to progress to more hearty foods.

When you feel you are able to graduate from the liquid diet, you can try out the following meals to sustain your nutritional intake while making you feel full:

  • Omelets with cooked vegetables and cheese
  • Vegetable smoothies
  • Crescent rolls with cooked fruit inside
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Parmesan zucchini
  • Butternut squash soup
  • Cheddar and broccoli soup
  • Miso Soup
  • Vegetable and noodle soup.

Of course, this list isn’t all-inclusive, and there are many other meals that will fit the “soft”
food requirement to aid with the healing process.

Some people don’t wait to graduate to solid foods, but it truly is an imperative part of your post-operative care.

Eating a steak after right after a dental implant procedure is like playing baseball after a shoulder injury repair.

If you chew on solid foods, you will be putting a strain on the area that the procedure was completed.

You could get pieces stuck in it, and the implant can become irritated and not heal properly. Infection can occur as well.

Allow your body to heal correctly and in a healthy manner by following the soft food diet after surgery, for the recommended time your doctor suggests. Chewing a piece of gum, or indulging in a few potato chips is not worth failure of the implant procedure!
