Choose Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

When one thinks of cosmetic dentistry, they automatically assume that they won’t be able to afford the smile that they are longing for. But, the truth of the matter is, there are a wide array of different procedures available for every price range. Over the past ten years, cosmetic dentistry has become more a mainstream option for those seeking help with their smile. In fact, almost every dentist performs some kind of cosmetic surgery on a daily basis! From small changes, all the way to major oral surgery, there are multiple options available for those looking for a change. Missing, discolored, and chipped teeth no longer have to hinder you!

When speaking of cosmetic dentistry, we are speaking about the appearance of the teeth, mouth, and smile. General dentistry focuses on the health of the teeth and gums. Cosmetic dentistry has been an option for many years, however; recent advances have made it so patients are left with a more natural, strong result.

Because cosmetic dentistry is considered elective, it is not covered by most insurance companies. The cost of procedures vary, and typically range between $300 and $4000, depending on the procedure and the severity of the condition.

Some of the many cosmetic procedures available include:

  • Bonding: Tooth-colored materials are attached to the tooth itself in order to repair chipped, broken, cracked, or stained teeth in order to improve appearance.
  • Crown Lengthening: Excess gum tissue is removed, allowing more of the tooth’s crown to be exposed. This gives the appearance of a longer tooth and a more even gum line. Minor oral surgery is needed.
  • Smile Makeovers: The overall appearance of the mouth and teeth is taken into consideration in order to come up with a plan to make a better overall smile and improved tooth appearance. Normally, several cosmetic procedures are involved and many sessions are needed to completely revamp the patients smile.
  • Tooth Reshaping: Enamel is modified or removed in order to reshape the tooth. This procedure goes hand-in-hand with bonding for an improved appearance.
  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth that are discolored or stained are brightened with a special substance. This is done in the office or at home with a prescription from the dentist.

When looking for a dentist to perform cosmetic dental procedures, look for one with experience and skill. The cosmetic dentistry field does not have any additional requirements needed in order to practice, and dentist with a general dentistry degree can perform the procedures. Continuing education courses regarding treatments and procedures should be taken to ensure the patient is getting top-level care.

Consider asking your potential dentist for the procedure for the following:

  • Before and After photos of patients that they have previously treated.
  • References of patients they have treated.
  • Proof that they have had continued education in cosmetic procedures.
  • Proof that they are a member of the AACD– This ensures that they have studied in the field of cosmetic dentistry and have taken an exam for it.

People today aren’t willing to stay unhappy with their smile. There is such an emphasis on looking young and overall appearance, that more and more people are turning to cosmetic procedures for relief and increased confidence. Not many people are born with naturally perfect teeth, but with the help of a dental professional, you can achieve the result you are hoping for!
