Do Veneers ruin your real teeth?

VeneersWhen done by a dental professional, veneers will not ruin your teeth.

But, there are still a few things to consider when you are making the decision to get or not to get veneers. Not all clients are ideal candidates for veneers. An examination is performed to determine whether a patient is a suitable candidate for this type of cosmetic dentistry. Veneers are a poor option if a patient suffers from gum disease, has weak teeth, or other dental problems. Veneers are also not a good option for people who are prone to grinding their teeth as doing so repeatedly over time can seriously damage veneers.

If veneers aren’t suitable for a patient, however, there are still other options available in cosmetic dentistry such as dental bonding or other orthodontic treatments.  These options are best discussed with a professional dentist during the examination.

More information about veneers

Veneers are essentially tooth-shaped hollow shells that are simply placed over your existing teeth. They hide flaws by changing the shape, color, and size of the teeth. Veneers are made of either ceramic or porcelain, and they are often made of composite components as well.

Most commonly, when a patient’s teeth are stained to the extent that whitening treatments no longer work, dentists turn to veneers. Of course, there are also additional indicators that veneers would impact a patient’s life positively:

  • The patient has gaps in their existing teeth.
  • The patient has chipped teeth.
  • The patient has worn down teeth from grinding.
  • The patient has broken teeth,
  • The patient has signs of erosion on the teeth.
  • The patient has uneven, misshapen teeth.
  • The patient has teeth that are not aligned properly.

In all of the above situations, veneers would assist in getting the client the smile that they are longing for, and deserve.

How are veneers applied?

When preparing the teeth for veneer adhesion, half a millimeter of enamel is removed from each tooth that will be covered with the veneer. This makes a bit of room for the veneer to fit, and will make sure that the veneer will not look larger than the tooth that it is covering. Before the enamel is removed, an anesthetic is administered to assist with patient comfort. An impression is then taken to ensure that the dental lab-created veneers with the desired measurements and exact dimensions required for optimum fit. Temporary veneers are placed until the new custom veneers arrive from the dental lab. The process usually takes between two and three weeks.

Benefits of veneers

There are multiple benefits of veneers, the most prominent being:

  • Teeth that look and feel just as your natural teeth did when they were in optimum condition.
  • Teeth that are extremely stain resistant due to the porcelain or ceramic used.
  • Teeth that give you the smile you have been longing for.
  • Teeth that can last up to ten years when taken care of properly.
  • Teeth that are designed to appear just as you want your smile to look.
  • Teeth that no longer have gaps.

If you do not take care of your veneers appropriately, the teeth that are underneath are susceptible to decay. The veneers can also be damaged by grinding the teeth.
