How Long Do Veneers Last?

How Long Do Veneers Last?

One the main questions from patients when considering cosmetic dentistry options is how long do veneers last?

Sharing an unguarded smile isn’t easy when you feel self-conscious about the imperfections of your teeth.

Porcelain veneers are naturally colored shells that are placed over the front of a tooth in order to conceal cosmetic flaws, making teeth appear whiter and more aligned.

This is a big investment for many who want assurance that their veneers will last for a good while. If you’re considering veneers, your dentist will likely give you two options – composite or porcelain veneers.

Both types of veneers have advantages and disadvantages and have different lifespans.

How long do veneers last?

Depending on whether you get porcelain or composite veneers, and how well you care for them, the life span of your veneers will vary. Porcelain veneers can last up to 12 years whereas composite veneers typically last for around 4 to 8 years.

The main difference between composite and porcelain veneers is that composite veneers are made from a synthetic mix of plastics and glass which are then applied to one layer at a time. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are thin shells of porcelain that are applied to the front of a tooth through bonding

Composite veneers have several benefits

  • Less expensive to porcelain veneers
  • Cracks and chips can be repaired
  • Less enamel is removed from your natural teeth

Drawbacks to composite veneers include the following

  • Are less durable and less resistant to stains
  • A shorter lifespan to porcelain
  • Look less natural and look bulkier

Now let’s look at the benefits to Porcelain veneers

  • Greater durability and more resistant to stains
  • Very very natural looking
  • Last a lot longer

And the drawbacks …

  • A damaged veneer cannot be repaired, only replaced
  • Treatment takes longer, typically 3 days

A closer look at porcelain veneers… Benefits:

  • More durable and resists stains better than composite veneers
  • Extremely natural aesthetics
  • Longer lifespan

Potential drawbacks:

  • Damaged veneers can’t be repaired, they must be replaced
  • Treatment takes longer to complete (normally 3 days)
